Scapbooks and genealogy

1930-1940

This era was during the Great Depression and during that time both my mom and my dad were born. My dad's mother died during this time giving birth to his brother and his father could not support the family so he went back into the Navy.  My dad and his brother were sent to an orphanage and his sister was sent to live with the grandma.
He had lots of stories about how the care takers were so mean and how they would be locked the basement and fed left over food.  He even ran away a few times which he was sent to a boys school. As you can see there were lots of stories but I never wrote down dates or address while my dad was still alive. Now I have many questions while I am scanning family pictures. (with my Flip-Pal of coarse.)

I intend to make a scrapbook when I am done but in the mean time I found out that the 1940 census will be released free to the public on April 2, 2012.  So I will be doing some genealogy searching too.

Here are the website to visit if you are interested:

‎1940census.archives.gov
The 1940 Census is an official web site of the U.S. Government, administered by the National Archives and Records Administration in partnership with Archives.com

And the 1930 Census is already released.
1930cenus.archives.gov

If you want to know where and how to begin your research, you can go to:
Also you can click on the Ancestory.com box in the right column and start your own genealogy.

I have all sorts of ideas of combining the scrapbook and genealogy.

Have fun searching!!

Who Do You Think You Are

"Who Do You Think You Are" was on last night and I really enjoyed the show. Looking back and trying to find your ancestors is so rewarding. I am still scanning pictures, with my Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner, of my family and have found so many great photos, some from dear family member. I thought I would share with you this photo of my mother and her sister, taken in the 1930's. Look at that awesome baby carriage!!! The real picture is this faded. I ran it through Photoshop and here is a b&w version.
I'm not sure which one I like better but it is sure nice to have both!

Did I say I LOVE my Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner !!!

Since my mother pasted away

It's been 10 months since my mother pasted away. And with that it seems all my inspiration, imagination, and incentive have past away also. No....I am not depressed....just no ideas come to mind when it comes to painting!

I did do a few projects.

One of them being a Key West Subway Art (or topography) that is going into my living room.

Another project was for my grand-daughter for Christmas it was a wood kitchenette that I painted.

Before:                                          After:

I guess these are little steps to getting back to my Art.

But I think this just sums it all up, by Ira Grass

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get pass this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know that its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you finish one piece. It’s only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just gotta fight your way through."

JUST DO IT !!!!!

Cool Flip-Pal mobile scanner

Oh, I am so excited!!!!

If you are a scrapbooker, quilter, or doing Genealogy you are going to love this!!

I GOT MY FLIP-PAL SCANNER!!!

People, I have been looking for something like this for a while now.

My mom passed away last year, my husbands aunt the year before and we have inherited a lot of old pictures and albums. Now, I can have all of this on the computer.

Now, here is what really sold me on it.....there is NO software to install....and it has 600 and 300 dpi resolution setting.

One of the best things about Flip-Pal is that you can scan photos while they are still in the album. And was it easy to use!! I was so excited I read the directions for a few seconds and I had it working.

For albums you pop off the lid, place the scanner face-down and press the big green button. Done! You have your first scan and it shows up in the little display and now your ready for the next picture. If you are scanning single pictures, you place the lid back on, lift the lid and place your picture in the scanner push the green button and your ready for your next picture.

I usually scan while I am watching TV.  (My first night I scanned around 300 photos.)

Yes, it is that easy!

Once your done scanning you put the memory card into this USB stick, put the USB stick into your computer.  Then you can either open it up like a regular USB drive and look at the files, move them into Photoshop, or you can open them up into I-Photo if you have a Mac.

Simple...Simple....Simple!!!   I LOVE MY FLIP-PAL SCANNER!!

If you are interested in purchasing one of these scanners just press here and you will go directly to their website.

Folk Art Snowman!

Prang, DAS Clay, 2.2 lb Block Air-Drying Modeling Clay in White (00316)I am still playing with the air-dry clay or paper clay called DAS Clay and have a few things in development.  Here is a sneak preview of one of the folk art snowman and he stands 4 inches high.  He still needs a few tweeks. There are 2 more in the drying process and then they need to be painted. I also have a Santa that is 6 inch tall but he is still in the working process. I don't know if he will be sitting or if I will be adding legs yet....hmmm!

Wordle

One of our new Members - Chriss Fletcher, from The Hive,  wrote a blog "Random Sources of Distraction".  Just loved her blog!!! In her blog she posted a Wordle.  I had never heard of a Wordle, so of course having all the time in the world I went to play.

Wordle: redfish artwork 6

YES,  She Now Has All of US HOOKED!!!

Brag Monday

It brag Monday on The Graphics Fairy and I went to work trying to find something I could whip up for this Coffee Pot.  I borrowed from the Graphic Fairy this image of the music sheet which says "Around the Christmas Tree".  First I distressed the sides with Distress Ink for Tim Holtz and then used E6000 to glue it on to the pot. I then went scavenging for something else to put on it and found this Santa.  I did the same distress ink and glued it on to the music sheet. Found a few other things and here it is. I won't be making coffee with it but it does make for a nice flower arrangement.

The Halloween Gang!

Well, I did it!!!

As some of you might know I have just started making Paper Clay dolls. This is all new to me so it really was fun. I had the support of a great group called "The Hive".  They have been so inspiring and a few helped me with some tricks of the trade. They are artist of all kinds and when you need help with anything, all you do is ask and someone will have the answer for you.

So now here it is....The Halloween Gang!!

My last two projects were the cat, who's name is Chester and the Candy Corn guy. The cat is made of syrofoam and paper clay and is attached to a box which is decorated with lace and buttons.

Candy Corn guy is made of syrofoam and paper clay but his legs are wooden skewers.  I think he looks better in person cause he looks antique. I think the flash dulls him out and doesn't show all the wrinkles.  (Candy Corn Guys thinks he looks younger and sexier and chose this picture.)

I really don't know if he is completely done yet...he might get some arms and socks. We'll have to see if he will allow me to do that yet.
He is just so excited about Halloween!!!
